Mark, Have you changed the gear size? There are two different sized drive gears for the output shaft and a corresponding range of plastic driven gears. If you mismatch them they get chewed up. It's unlikely that the gear on the shaft has moved. It is a press fit and should be fairly centered in the speedo drive hole. Look in and see if it is way off center. My best guess would be mismatched gear sizes. I believe we have a tranny expert or two on the list. Maybe one will post a better answer.
