Remove the tailshaft housing from the transmission so you can put it on your
workbench and get better access to it. You may also have some wear on the
driveshaft yoke that will require replacment. A good friend is going thru this
problem now. He replaced the yoke and bushing 1,000 miles ago and it's worn
out again. He has shipped his driveshaft to Atlanta to get it balanced and
checked to see if it's warped or bent. It was shortened a year ago by a local
machine shop when he installed a 700-r4 transmission but there is no local shop
that can balance it.

The U-joints seemes fine.
But the brass bushing in the output shaft have far to much side play!
So I guess that the drive shaft is unbalanced causing the damage to the bushing.
Do I have to tear out the whole gearbox to change that bushing?

Best regards

While you are replacing the U-joints check to see how much side play is in your yoke, the transmission may need a new bushing in the output shaft.  This can be caused by an out of balance driveshaft.  Been their, done that.

When's the last time you changed the driveshaft u-joints? When they go bad, they will shake the vehicle as you describe.

I get really hairy vibrations in the car at approx 80 kmh (50mph?)
If I give the car a bit of gas & keep the engine working/pulling it dissapears
at speeds below the one mentioned above.
But if I don't let the engine/drivetrain work enough or if the speed get's higher
it feels like my dental work's going to fall out :-(

It's like sitting in a sub-woofer, Everything's vvviiiibbbbrrraaaatttiiinnnggg.
Even the air in the cup!

Any suggestions?

I'm planning to have my drive shaft balanced, could that be it?

Best regards
Pelle
