You know,Brad,,I'm starting to think a 66-67 Chevelle/Elky can handle the same size rolling stock as a 68-72.

I was pretty surprised about the 6" that Chuck is running after seeing my car, but I can only report what he told me.  As for the rear, I can only estimate from the space I have with my 9.5" wheels.  I see a bit of room left, so I am sure a 10" wheel would be no problem, and perhaps an 11" with the right tires.  A 305 is only an inch or so bigger than my 275, and I think there is enough room for that.

Brad,the 6" backspace figure I quoted was for 68-72's. That's interesting that you can run a front 17x9.5 w/6" backspacing on a 67 with stock control arms,something I wasn't sure could be done. Nice to know a 66-67 can handle the same size front rolling stock as a 68-72.
However,I've never seen or heard of a 66-67 running a 10" rear rim,much less an 11" wide hoop. The 66-67 rear fenderwells are definitely tighter than the 68-72's.

The max in front is close to 275.  I have 17x9.5 wheels with 5 7/8" backspace and 275/40/17 wheels all around.  You could probably be OK with 5 3/4" backspace and the same setup.  Note that I have the Global West Tubular Upper A-Arms and 11" F-body spindle and brakes.  Stock setups will be different.  Chuck Hanson told me he used 17x9.5" wheels with a 6" backspace on his stock suspended '67.
 
In the rear, I would be wary of 6" backspace, as not all cars are evenly put on the frame.  My driver side had some minor rub that I fixed with the BFH on the wheel well (trunk) to make room.  If you want max in the rear on a '66/'67, then you could try a 17x11" wheel with the proper sized tire.  There is definitely a bit more room in the rear to the outside for my setup.

On a 68-72,you can run a 15x10 rear wheel with 5.5-5.75" backspacing and 295/50/15 tire,,a common combination.

Hey guys,
   I have a 70 SS I am putting together. I want to run the widest tires on the back I possibley can without making the car look silly. I am curious as to what size tires, wheels and backspacing everyone is running.
