making sure I have plenty of ventilation when applying POR-15.

That is correct. better than that is screw a metal screw
in the hole. Then turn it upside down for a second (to coat the screw
threads). Then put the can in the frig. I have some 3 yrs old that I use
3 x a yr that is still good.
