thanks everyone I didn't think it was on backwards, but then again sometimes you never know, the other thing is its a brand new starter, but I have to replace the flexplate anyway so I guess I will try both thanks again everyone.

It is possible, but unlikely.  It sounds like your problem is a bad starter solenoid.  I've had them do that before.
