There are posi carriers and open carriers. You can't make one into the other. So in answer to your question, Yes, you would have to get a new carrier.
No disrespect but a rearend build is a pretty tricky thing. It requires a complete knowledge of the mechenics and percision ajustments requiring specialty tools. I would advise you take the housing to a pro and have him build it for you.
