I read an article about letting the starter find
it's own way
to the best position & it seems to have worked
(knock on wood).
I tightened the bolts just enough to hold it in to
place but loose
enough to make it move when I engage it. Then I
tightened the
bolts. I used the bolts that came with my starter
so I assume
they're the right ones?
Nothing's loose, the starter's almost new &
have been working
flawlessly for a year and the suddenly it started
to hit the flexplate.
Hope it's ok now, we'll see?

Are the starter bolts still tight? If they are
loose, did you use the correct type? The starter uses special
mount bolts with a knurl on the shaft to prevent them from vibrating
loose.
Is it possible that the flexplate is loose?

The starter is quite new, a year or so.
It's a Powermaster "mini starter"
