I think I missed the main parts of this thread, but which wire are you trying to replace? If it is a point wire going to the solenoid on the starter, this won't necessarily help a hot starting problem. The only place you have a large amperage drain is on the positive and negative battery cables. If you are hearing the solenoid 'click' then that circuit has been made and the problem lies in the effort to energize the starter motor. Lots of folks have talked about 'heat soak' on their starters and solenoids and have installed remote solenoids, just like a Ford. Also, the timing being greatly advanced will make it difficult to turn over when hot.
Anyway, since I missed most of the fun part of this thread, thought I would throw some other ideas out.

John, Go to a marine supply house and buy non insulated connectors. The best are made by Ancor. You will find they will crimp on the wire real nice and if you need them insulated, use Ancor's heat shrink tubing.

<x-tad-bigger>No I didn't. I have never had very good luck with those crimp-on connectors (they come loose and/or the wire falls out) and I didn’t have time to solder one on. Good idea though. Maybe I'll go back and do that. Hopefully I won’t have a reason to go back though.</x-tad-bigger>

John, didn't you put a terminal end on the wire?
