For drag racing, 4.56.

For the street, 3.73 or higher

I have 3.89 gears in my 71 with a 28" tall rear tire. With a little torque converter slip thrown in for good measure my tach reads real close to 3200 RPM @ 60 MPH. For anything other than driving to the local get together at the McDonalds the gears are way too low.

Chevy used to put 4.11 gears together with small blocks and powerglides. The cars would jump but couldn't get any gas mileage. GM did that because 1st gear in a Powerglide is not much lower than 2nd in a Turbo 350 but high gear is 1:1 just like the Turbo. To make the cars quick from a stop they used low rear end gears and let the poor things rev in high gear. You have to remember, gas was only around 30 cents a gallon back when they built those combinations and not many people really cared about gas mileage.

My opinion, for what it's worth, is go 3.73s or higher.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] 3.73 or 4.56?

OK folks,

I have the opportunity to use 3.73 or 4.56 gears in
the 10-bolt posi I'm going to put in the '66. The car
has a 300+/-HP 327 and PG. Anyone have any thoughts
or previous experience with the 4.56 gears and the
PG/small block setup?

I drive the car to local shows, and want to be able to
take it to Cecil on occasion. A relative told me to
do the 4.56s and nothing less, thus my indecision.

Thanks,

Jim
