I have a similar story.  A friend of mine that lived down the street from my parents' house had a 69 Malibu.  It was a beater.  Primer grey with a black vinyl top, 350 auto and a 2 barrel carb.  I had lots of fun riding in it in high school and always loved the look of the 69.  Anyway,  a year or so after high school he decided to rebuild the motor.  Basically, he started taking the motor apart, but never finished for some reason.  I can't remember why now, but he was fed up and frustrated with the project.  Since he knew how much I loved the car, he offered to sell it to me.  I said, "how much?"  He said, "$200 and it's yours."  I gave him the $200 and we pushed it home 3 or 4 blocks over to my parents house.

A week or two later I pulled the motor and trans.  Sold the trans to a buddy for $150 and the motor (in pieces) to someone else for $100.  So I actually made $50 on the deal!  That was about 12 years ago now, but I still have the car today.
