Here's what I found in case anyone is interested:

=======

I bought an Autometer trans temp gauge for my '96 dually when I had it. It was a 7.4 & 4L80E. The 4L80E has a pressure test port on the driver's side, just above the shift linkage. It will have a pipe plug in it. Remove, install the sending unit (mine went in as-is with no adapters) and hook it up. Couldn't be easier and worked great.

Edit - By the way, I verified that it was a good place to put it by checking the temperature all around the transmssion case, pan, etc. with an IR thermometer - it was consistently within 1 degree of what the gauge said. And, I am about 99% sure from recent memory that the 4L60E and 700R4 have these ports, too, for the guys with those trans that want to install a temp gauge.

So, I know the wires, I have a resistance chart, but, can I actually connect an aftermarket gauge to it?
Any suggestions? or website reading recommendation?

Thanks,
Mike
