The squeal may be the converter not yet full of fluid. I hope. If so as John
has stated you won't do any more harm by idling engine until all parts get
fluid. gm66

If it’s broken, I don’t think you'll make it any worse by trying it again.
Once a transmission is "smoked" they typically want to do a total rebuild.
I've never heard an automatic transmission squeal at idle though.
Personally, I would try it, and try to get the fluid level right asap.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Did I kill my TH350?

Pulled my car out yesterday to see if I could get her to move under her own
power. It has been a long time but finally got the drive train hooked up and
the brakes working.

Started her up and let it idle for about 5 minutes. When I went to put it in
gear it didn't move. Shut her down and checked out the linkage and all was
fine. Started it back up and tried again no luck.

I know I had put fluid in it when I mounted the trans. I remember making a
point of doing it just so I wouldn't forget later. I decided to check
anyway. It wasn't showing on the stick. Figuring that it was just a little
low I left her idle while I added the fluid. Ended up taking 4 quarts. When
I reached the dipstick something started to squeal. I shut her down and
haven't been back since.

It was a fresh re-build and I am really hoping that I didn't kill it. In
hind sight, the transmission cooler and the torque converter must have
sucked up what I put in it.

Any thoughts? Haven't got up the nerve to turn the key again. How much
damage can I do in idle with that much fluid missing?
