Mike , I turned the distributer one tooth counter clock wise after setting the crank mark at 6 degrees BTDC. It jumps a little between 6 degrees and 8deg. and is idling btween 800rpm to 850. still a little rough, but once the RPM,s are up it smooths right out. maybe the cam is a little more lumpy than I thought ? anyhow thank you and all others that replied to my post.

Jimmy, You would only have to move the dist a tooth if you cannot turn it far enough to get your desired timing. Like if you are hitting the manifold with the vac advance and unable to adv or retard to the btdc you want. I doubt you are off 180 degrees but you may want to go back thru process of setting the dist in place just to be sure. Find TDC. decide where you want number one and drop the dist in with it pointing(the rotor button) at your number one. If you are trying to do this with no help I feel for you. It's tough. But with the dist set close, it should fire off and allow you to get a baseline timing to run in the cam. Let us know how you fair.

Mike I cant get it to run for any length of time with the mark even close to the Dial with the timing light. if I were to to guess when I put the light on it, its reading`14-16 degrees advanced ? is it possible I need to lift the distributeor out and turn it  clockwise a tooth and drop it back in ?  Jimmy C.

Jimmy, Unless you are running a roller cam, your first effort should be running in the cam. At initial startup, Set the timing at around 6 to 8 BTDC, then bring the RPMs up to around 2500 and hold it there for about twenty minutes. Follow the cam manufactures instructions. A fan set in front of the radiator will help keep temps down. It really helps to have a buddy around for this. My experience with Street Avenger carbs has been they need very little adjustment. With the cam ran in and timing set, check float levels, adjust low speeds if needed and set idle.

I just got everything together to start a freshly rebuilt 454ci. with out of the box Holly 770 street Avenger(vacum secondery, electric choke) Big end HEI Dist. I filled my new four core radiator, set up mechanical oil & temp gauges to monitor motor while doing initial break in. Its my First time and I don't remember the sequence of initial set up / tune-up that was taught in H.S. auto shop class was 1978-79. do you set the slow idle first then fast idle, then time it? the motor runs cold until the mechanical fast idle kick down, then it won't idle on its own. sorry for the drawn out post, but I sure would like to know the right procedure, before I hurt something in the motor. Thanks, Jimmy C.
