I've actually checked all the metal I've replaced on my 69's with a micrometer (after removing all paint w/ no rust deterioration. The sheet I've tested was from fender, quarter, and trunk. All the original GM steel is 20g. All the after market replacements from both Goodmark and DII is 21 or 22 gauge. Some of the small pieces (i.e. trunk extensions were 20g)
That said, I do believe the earlier Chevelles had a bit thicker skins.

I could be wrong. Now that I think about it 16 gauge does seem a bit thick.

I'm not familiar with 66 Chevelles but the 69's I work on have 20 gauge steel in most places (i.e fenders, doors, quarters, trunk). I can't believe any 64-72 Chevelles have 16 gauge sheet on the exterior.

IIRC, the sheet metal is 16 gauge.
Be very careful of your heat on your sheet metal, lest you warp it.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] sheet metal

Hi Everyone...
I have just bought a welder and am slowly learning the art of welding...I was wondering if anyone can tell me the gauge of the sheet metal used on fenders and quarter panels on our cars..1966 in particular but I am sure they are mostly the same in the 64-72 range....Maybe I am wrong..
Thanx very much..
John
