Yes,my 55 Chev tudor wagon was factory equipped with a three speed overdrive transmission. Activating it was done by pulling out a handle under the dash. My 55 came from the factory with a 235 six cylinder and 4.11 rear gear.

Speaking of overdrives, my 66 chassis service manual talks a bit about a 30% reduction overdrive. Has anybody every seem one work?

You're probably referring to a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. Those are nice set-ups but are kinda expensive at around $2K and their overdrive is only 28%.

I remember hearing about a overdrive adapter to bolt to the tail shaft of your transmission, maybe a option to check out if that all you want is overdrive.good luck Eddie Bumgarner 66ss conv.
