The later rears are approximately 2" wider so your backspacing will have to account for that. As for 64-65's,I've seen them run 17x9.5 rears with 5.7" backspace and 285/40/17 tires on the back with the stock rear. If you want to run 15's,a 15x8 wheel with 5" backspace and 275 tire will fit with a stock 64-65 rear.
Maybe Dale can add some input to my comments. He has run the later rear in his 67 SS.

Anyone have experiences & knowledge to share when you put a 68-72 12 bolt in a 64-67.  How do the sizes & backspacing numbers work then?  Biggest I could get in my 65 was 235's with standard Rallyes with I think 4" backspace.  And I got some rub on one side!

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Tire - Wheel Backspacing

A car's wheelwell doesn't know what size wheel you're using but the total width & diameter of the tire & wheel combo. But to answer your question,15" wheels will give you a much greater tire selection than 14" units.
1964-67's can handle up to a 285-width rear tire and 68-72's can handle up to a 315-width. Running these widths require getting the backspacing spot-on.

Dale;

Thanks, already printed it out. If I wanted to stay with the same SS wheel but try to put larger tires do you have a recommendation? Would 15" be better and fit ok with bigger tire?

While the results are the same, the terminology and measurement techniques are a bit different between the two.  Check this page on my web site; explains offset and backspacing pretty well.

Question;

Would someone on the list mind explaining wheel / tire backspacing? Remember on the Chevelle I had in high school when I put bigger tires on I had scraping issues. Especially on the rear. Been reading some posts on Team Chevelle and everyone talks about wheel and tire combinations in conjunction with backspacing. Is this some new stuff? I will probably be changing the tires and or wheels on the car I bought so I though I would start asking now. I believe the wheels on the car now are the stock 14" type SS wheel.

Thanks
