The later rears are approximately 2" wider so your backspacing will have to account for that. As for 64-65's,I've seen them run 17x9.5 rears with 5.7" backspace and 285/40/17 tires on the back with the stock rear. If you want to run 15's,a 15x8 wheel with 5" backspace and 275 tire will fit with a stock 64-65 rear. Maybe Dale can add some input to my comments. He has run the later rear in his 67 SS. But to answer your question,15" wheels will give you a much greater tire selection than 14" units. 1964-67's can handle up to a 285-width rear tire and 68-72's can handle up to a 315-width. Remember on the Chevelle I had in high school when I put bigger tires on I had scraping issues. Especially on the rear. Been reading some posts on Team Chevelle and everyone talks about wheel and tire combinations in conjunction with backspacing. Is this some new stuff? I will probably be changing the tires and or wheels on the car I bought so I though I would start asking now.
