Just some thoughts here but if your budget can't afford some better
heads,I'm not sure it can stand the cost of a 496 build,either. I've seen
Merlin oval ports w/268cc runners sell for as low as $900/pair. A good 496
rotating assembly is probably much higher than that. Just my opinion but
4.10 gears are overkill for even an OD auto. Been there,done that. A 454
with some good oval port heads,hyd cam,and dual plane intake is going to be
a torque monster so steep gearing is unnecessary. You could install some
3.31 or 3.55 gears and get by without an overdrive. TH400's are really
strong,stock. A 200R4 or 700R4 strong enough to handle a healthy BBC isn't
cheap.
You already have a good engine,it sounds like. Freshen it up,add a hyd cam
with .525-.550 lift, 230-240 duration on 110 degree centers,and a
free-flowing exhaust will make for a kick-butt combo.
