     0, 1, and 2 all indicate Chevrolet.

In later years that was followed by a two-letter plant code, a three digit
date code (002 to 365 - I assume they had New Year's Day off) and one final
digit to indicate the year (e.g. 8 means 1978 in such a case).

There it is. Now you will always know where your Q-jet came from.
