True about blanket statements but here (NY) the seller can't let you drive it away with his plates on it (because he will be fined for every day the plates are out after he cancels his coverage on the car), and you can't get new plates until it's insured. Trailers and cash change things but here the only way a person from out of state can drive it away the same day is if they pay in advance and the seller sends the papers in advance, which means it is not happening in one day.
Anyway, in my experience anyone who has ever said they wanted to drive it away was definitely fishy.
Then there was the guy who said that if we could tow it to his house that day he would pay me in "two weeks". He was even willing to give me the phone number of one of his buddies who would vouch for what a great guy he was.
There are lots of scammers out there.
