Thanks to everone who responded, I worked on the preload and that
corrected the problem.  Amazing there is so much information on the
list. Thanks again for the information and help.     David

I think your SOL regarding buying just the TOP bearing, it's an integral

part of the turn signal switch.
" to much side movement" it this movement felt/observed with the
steering 
wheel and column complete? Why I ask is the installation of the steering

wheel and spring preloads the upper and lower bearings. the preload  is 
determined by the spring &steering wheel and the clamp location at the 
bottom of the steering column @ the bearing/seal .
