For Karl,Reference dash removal, the ACES magazine ran a fine artical on the R&R of a dash in a 69,its been a while, maybe two years but it took you through the steps with photos included. It may be still available. Later Gene

Not many liked my use of pan head or rounded hex cap
screws and lock nuts. But they look great! I may have

I have purchased replacement aluminum rivets locally (here in SF) and made a
couple tools to both help hold the rivet heads and expand the bottoms like
factory. When I have finished any of my Chevelles (mostly '67's) they have
all had a factory perfect look without any odd fasteners. I can assist
anyone with this if they live in the area, but if I can do this I'm sure
there are others around everywhere as competent. Ed

Fellow '69 owners. I'm thinking about fabricating a box that attaches to an
air cleaner and mates up to some gaskets that would be attached to the
mounting hardware of the grills in a '69 SS hood. That way you could be
assured cold outside air intake rather than just engine compartment air.
Would you guys be interested in something like that? It seems like it would
be really easy. It could probably even be set up with a swinging door on a
choke cable so that in winter you could make it take in engine compartment
air rather than outside air until it warms up.

Hi Eddie,

I have one on my El Camino. I don't know if it works any better than the
paper style but I do like the fact that I can clean it and reuse it. When I had to replace the paper element (before the K&N) it seemed the parts stores
never had a simple round 14x3 element on the shelf, so now that hassle is
gone.

Karl,

I went through the photos I took of my resto ( over 150 pictures) and found nothing I thought would be helpful to you. I have pictures of the dash after it was removed but nothing that would demonstrate the procedure.

What you are wanting to do is surprisingly simple, though. Begin by removing the phillips head screws from the underside of the upper dash pad. These are underneath the edge of the pad very close to the edge towards you as you are sitting in the drivers seat (don't forget to remove the two that are behind the glovebox door). Pull the pad towards you to disengage the clips that hold down the front and remove the pad. The rest of the dash is mounted to a metal frame which is bolted to brackets on the inner firewall. There are several along the top that are exposed when the dashpad is removed (4 I think) and two which are at the outer edges of the bottom of the dash facing downward. Once these are removed you can remove the entire dash as one piece being careful to unplug any wiring harnesses and vacuum hoses as you go. I used masking tape and labeled everything with numbers to make sure everything went back together correctly.

When you are removing and handling the dash be careful to support it well from end to end. Much of it's rigidity is lost when it is unfastened from the firewall and you could crack or break it if you're not careful.

It would be a good idea to invest in a Factory Assembly Instruction Manual. It covers every facet of the construction of your Chevelle or El Camino. I couldn't have completed my frame off restoration without it. They are available from several sources and cost around $35.00 if I remember correctly. Paid for itself many times over.

Put the Monte Carlo on lift today, pulled the dust cover to see if maybe the torque convertor had come loose but it was still bolted in, the flex plate bolts all still in place, so must have problem inside trans. Fluid level good and pink with good smell. I'm really curious as it has only 643 easy miles on it. The B&M 2004R in my 478HP/516TQ El Camino has some hard Mustang killing miles on it and working fine, just goes to show you. Will post findings when I get them.

Sounds great, but I'm also curious about many of the aftermarket synthetics.
There is Red line, Amsoil, Royal Purple that is big in my area, Lucas, and
others. How can you separate the bull from the fact! And again how long will
it last. If a year is all, then you may be getting bad oil even though the
bottle or can has never been opened! Hence is there a manufacture date on
the container?

There has to be someone that tests all oil and compares them! Looks like a
lot of smoke and mirrors!

The company I work for has an oil analysis lab so I asked the

be about a year but that might not necessarily be true anymore.
She recommended checking ExxonMobil's website and I suppose it

Don't forget the bolt most people forget about. The one directly above the steering column. Unbolt the column and it will drop down out of your way. If you don't remove the bolt above the column you will get a crack immediately above the steering column when you try to pull up on the dash.......don't ask me how I know.

The shelf life of motor oil is "indefinate" as long as it's in origional container. Does not degrade unless used and then alot of it is recycled and reused. As far as type/mfg. any major oils are excellent such as Shell,Gulf,Havoline,Conoco and Quaker State. The only trick is to change it every 3000 miles and change the oil filter at the same time... Synthetics are also good if you are willing to pay the price. I put in alot of windshield time and all the personal/company vechicles I've driven performed to very high mileages/ (100,000 miles +) without an oil related problem. I have afew quarts of Shell oil that I bought about 4 years ago by the case. I wiil continue to use it in my 396/375 untill it's all gone without a worry. gm66

You worry about stuff too much,Dan. Motor oil isn't like fine wine. <g>
FWIW,oil is tested. Look on the label and it will tell you the spec.
However, the small synthetic companies often don't submit theirs for testing
because of the high cost of doing so.
Oil in a sealed container will probably outlive you.

Although i only post very rarely, i do want you all to know that i DO read each and every message posted on this mailing list, and as most that know me can tell you, other than changing my own oil, i'm pretty much ''mechanically challenged.'' Since I've joined this mailing list, I have learned ALOT about the upkeep/troubleshooting of my Chevelle. I just wanted to thank all of you who have ever posted anything on this board, I am much more informed about my car thanks to each and every one of you. It's hard to express my appreciation in a short email, but as of now, it's the best i can do. Thanks again.
