I don't actually sandblast, I glass bead. And yes it will look slightly different but will not damage the springs. One other small detail that works well, I hook the springs to a comealong and stretch them open enough to get the paint/sealer in between the coils so when you open your hood they look good inside and out. Glass beading isn't quite as abrasive. GM used a phosphate coating. Most people seem to paint them. If you want the natural look try sandblasting them and paint with a satin clear coat. I like using Eastwoods silver cadnium paint, but this is not correct.
