Yeah, it was a little different than a Chevy. No
the ring gear is 8.2 inches but different than the Chevy 8.2. Very few GTO's had
12 bolts, but to be honest with you, I don't remember it being a problem. Of
course the tires of that period didn't hook up real good. My Tempest has the BOP
8.2 with Moser axles and an Eaton posi. I have more HP than any factory GTO
had and I haven't had any rear end trouble. At least not yet.

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] looking for
a yoke seal 8.2 Pontiac rear end
So,a 66 GTO with 389 tripower and 4spd would only
have an 8.2 10 bolt while a Chevelle SS-396 with the mildest 396 and even a
powerglide would come standard with a 8.875" 12 bolt? Doesn't seem fair,does
it?
Did the BOP 10 bolts have a 12 bolt ring
gear?

No Clint, they didn't have 12 bolts unless it
was special ordered that way. Most GTO's that I have been around had the BOP
10.

Wouldn't a 66 Goat have a 12 bolt rear? How
about a 66 Tempest?

That's actually a better rear than the
Chevy 10 bolt. It's a BOP 8.2 rear and parts are no problem. I get mine
locally at the Carquest store. Tell em you have a 66 GTO so you don't
confuse them.

That's the rear end in my 66 elky. 10 bolt
posi, has no C-clips (I know cause I changed the bearings 7 yrs
ago). The place I got them is no longer in business.
Have no idea how the rear got in my elky, maybe a shortage
at GM? My Elky also has no hood spear. Weird.
Anyone know
where I should look?
