Folks,

I have replaced the pan gasket on a '68/454 with a 1 piece gasket without even loosening the motor mounts, and with the Turbo 400 in place. As I recall, I did remove the flex plate dust cover. I was able to drop the pan enough (1/2" or 1"?) to remove the old gasket, being careful not to drop any of it in the pan. I then worked the 1-piece over the crossmember, around the pan and up into place.

Hope this helps,

Fred

I have a 454, that has a rear seal leak, and I was told by a local mechanic it was too hard to drop the pan without lifting the engine, so...we're going to pull mine, and I have new ceramic coated headers and I pray I don't nick
them! Oh boy!

I don't think you can without lifting the engine, even with the trans out.

That's what I'm thinking also. And boy, would it ever be annoying to get
the pan loose, the gasket broke, then not be able to get the pan out!
DOH!!!

I don't think there's enough clearance between the pan & crossmember to
do get it off, but I've never tried it with the trans out.

I have the trans out for a clutch replacement, and now might be the time

to replace that pesky pan gasket that weeps a bit.

thanks
