I could not get them low enough.  One side was in and lined up but the other
side sata  good half inch away.  I don't think I could have spread them that
far.

hey Jim, when you say not wide enough are you talking 1/8"-3/16"or more. 
because when I was putting my bbc they were tight and the napa guy told me
that was because of how they were stamped out. I got a 3/8 threaded rod 2
nuts and spread them to fit,after that all worked fine. Jimmy C.
