Larry, If you are running a flat tappet cam your friend is dead on. It's a lack of zinc among other things. Frankly I have gone to Rotella at the advice of a chemist and ex drag racer. I don't know what to believe about oil anymore.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Engine Oil

A friend of mine who is a fleet services mgr for the City of Mt View Ca., and a avid drag racing fan, AND who drives his BB 67 Camaro to work everyday mentioned that due to pollution control laws oil makers have removed crucial additives that prevent wear from oil used by gas engines. He recommends that I consider diesel engine oil as it still has the additives that can help prevent abnormal wear. Any comments?
