Pete, The cubes used to tell the difference, but that has changed. Now you
can have a 454 SBC as well as a 454 BBC. The original SB was the 265. This
format was built all the way up to 400ci by GM. The first BBC I believe was
the 396, which was built into many different configurations. Basically they
are physically sized differently. The BBC has a larger block, heads.crank
etc. And the capability of being built into a larger displacement. A short
block is an engine minus the heads, manifolds and oil pan. A long block has
the heads and valve train.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Big block vs. Small block
Would like to know the difference between a small block and a big block
motor. I always thought a small block was anything 350 cu.in. and under, but
recently have heard a 400 referred to as a small block . Also would like to
know the difference between a "short block" and a "long block" .
Thanks , Pete Hnat
