If you are really concerned about doing burnouts, you should probably
get a big block. My 283 can definitely peel away from a stop and can
chirp the tires between first and second, but I really don't sit there
smoking the tires. I have an Edelbrock Performer intake and an
Edelbrock carb and a "mild street cam" but the heads, pistons, x-mans
etc. are all stock.
Hey, I'll take that 283 off of you if you don't want it. I need a SBC
for my 1970 Malibu. Hopefully I'll be spending the day painting the
trunk pans with corroseal.

I appriciate your input. I was thinking more power, also my 283
leaks and burns oil pretty bad so rather than rebuilding it i
thought i would be better off just replacing it. and i also thought,
if i spent the money to rebuild it, would i be sastisfied with the
power. John, have you done any upgrades to your 283? i.e.
headers, differant heads, intake, carberator, and is there enough
torque to smoke the tires. and do you think it would be more costly
to rebuild or replace it. I heard from several people that the 283
is a good engine so iam still unsure of which road to take.

I have a 1958 283 in my 1969 El Camino w/ a 1970 TH350 and it's all a
happy family. I want to put a 200-4R in my '70 Malibu. If I were you,
the thing I would want to get rid of is the Powerglide.
