Thanks for the info Devin-  Yep, I had some grease
between the seals and the spindle.  The ticking is
actually a feeling in the steering wheel, not a sound.
 It was hard to describe via email, but I gave it my
best 8^]

I think the truck has ABS but I'm not sure.  It has
SLS badges on it which I think is the top of the line
for that year ('98), but I can't tell for sure if the
truck had been "modified" or not.  I got it used in
2000 with 13k miles on it.
