1. The lifters on a 72 402 are hydraulic from the factory. Now that's not to say they haven't been changed out through the years for solids.
 
2. If you car is a daily driver or moderate high performance engine you will want hydraulics. Much less maintenance.
 
3.  Yes they can.
 
4. You don't absolutely have to change the cam unless your switching from solid to hydraulic or visa versa but the lifters on a flat tappet cam are broke into the cam and your system will be short lived if you don't change them both and break them in properly.

I’m in the beginning of research so I can fix whatever is wrong with #8 cylinder.

 

My first Q’s are!

1.      Are the lifters in a 1971 402 BB mechanical or hydraulic?

2.      What’s preferred?

3.      Can they be changed to what’s preferred?

4.      Do I have to change the cam if I change the lifters?
