B.T.W. Three of my buddies on a Swedish Chevelle forum had the same/similar problem and all of them got rid of the problem when they did the modification I suggested. I believe it's one of the most common starter problems which is actually a ignition switch problem!

The problem is that at times the gear on the starter comes out and hits the flywheel and will not engage the gears on the flywheel, I didn't make myself clear. Most of the time it has no problem, but at times it will not engage the flywheel. At first I thought it was the solenoid but when watching from under the car I saw the problem. Even tried beveling the gears on the leading edge a little more on the starter, hoping it would help engage.
