Usually it is the battery cables that cause the post problem (or at least contribute to it). There is a lock washer (if memory serves) under the bolt on the side post batteries. The washer deteriorates (crushes or acid takes it's toll) and the bolt runs further into the battery before it gets tight, unfortunately the bolt hole isn't deep enough and the post cracks. Easy enough to fix, just remove the bolt from the cable and either shim the bolt with a new washer, or trim the end of the bolt. YMMV, but this is what happened to my '02 Duramax..... BOTH batteries GRRR. Shimmed the bolts and have had no problems.

The positive post pulled right out. This really sucked with it being under the back seat, battery acid nice and close to the carpet, upolstery etc. Now I need to find a replacement that is configured with the gas release vents that go throught the floor pan.
