I have one and I open the gap up with a pair of pliers first. Then the tool 
will pull everything parallel when you gently squeeze it.

  thank you Bill, what does this pliers type gapper look like?? i have noticed 
that too- the electrode is at an angle to the center electrode, so the gap may 
be bigger on the outside and a bit smaller towards the inside where the 
electrode is attached to the plug body,,, does this tool straighten it out 
first and then rebend it somehow??
