Make sure you have good gas. Disconnect the fuel line from the carb and use
rubber fuel line and run it into a clean plastic milk or juice jug. Spray
the cylinders down with "top cylinder lube". Let it sit over night. Crank it
over without plugs.

Now check the gas in the jug. Look for beads of water or chunks of crud on
the bottom. If you have issues with the gas tank correct that first.

Now check to see if you have spark. Put one plug on a wire and ground it to
the exhaust. Crank it over and look for spark.

Install new plugs and give a shot of spray ether (starting fluid) into the
carb. You might need to fire up a couple of times until the carb is full of
gas. Fire extinguisher is good to have around. If gas shoots out the carb
smack the fuel bowl a couple times with a rubber mallet or screwdriver
handle to settle the floats and seat. The gaskets in the carb might look
wet. Don't worry, let them soak up gas over night then retighten the top
screws.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] [Chevelle List] Starting up an old motor...

Hey List,

I just bought this old car. The thing hasnt run in about 5 years. What all
should I do to get it running??? I was planning on changing the oil, filter,
flushing the radiator, new fuel and fuel filter, but what else? I've heard
something about squirting oil into the cylinders? Do I just squirt normal
oil in there, then try to start it up? Or do I leave the spark plugs out and
turn it over by hand or with the starter? Anything else I should do before
trying to start up this car?

Thanks for the help,
