If they're using a manually controlled washer, pressure washer I assume and
not a hot tank type dip, maybe they could cover the tag with a plastic bag,
tape it off, and be careful around the tag.

Isnt the ID tag riveted to the housing? Might be hard to find that type of
rivet. I believe they are aluminum and not a pop rivet.
