Tim, you have probably seen several good thoughts on a motor. I took a small 
Block chevy 2-bolt deal and did a stroker. I know you have a 454 but my point 
is the best money I ever spent was on the cylinder heads. Rebuild you block and 
reuse what you can. Magnaflux the parts, thghten up the bores and maybe throw 
in a good set of Hypereutectic pistons fitted to .0001 or 0002 clearance. Zero 
Deck the block and have whatever heads you choose pocket ported. IT's just 
makes the motor com alive. I later stepped up the carb and fuel pump and it's a 
monster in a 3600 pound car. 

That is my 2 cents worth.
