Eye Witness Testimonies and Discussion >From Exclusion to “Polimigra” Present and Past in the Struggle Against Anti-Immigrant Repression Tuesday, September 9 at 6:30 Radio Arte, 1401 W. 18th St. , Pilsen Immigrant rights activist Jorge Mujica will present the testimonies of: Nancy Flores, Dustin Simmons, Severa Ruiz, Erika Herrera, Paula Carballido, Shaun Harkin and others. Nancy Flores On Thanksgiving Day last year, a drunken police officer crashed into a car, killing Nancy ’s brother and his friend. Chicago Police Department officials have done everything possible to cover up evidence showing the officer was drunk. Nancy will discuss the latest developments in the case and how they have confronted the racism of Chicago ’s police institutions to get justice. Dustin Simmons is part of the 8th Section in Chicago Fire’s Toyota Park Stadium. Members of the Latino Sector in the stands have faced racist harassment by security employees of Monterrey Security Inc. In a show of solidarity, all groups of the 8th Section came together to protest the abuse, unfolding a huge banner that read “Fire, stop your racism!” Dustin will tell what he witnessed at the stadium and how the protest was organized. Severa Ruiz and Erika Herrera are part of the Families of the Mission . Severa’s husband, Juan and Erika’s brother, José, have faced the possibility of deportation after being held for traffic stops by the Chicago Police Department. Thanks to the Mission ’s efforts, Juan is free, but José continues his fight to be released. Severa and Erika will relate their experiences dealing with the police and with Cook County Jail. Paula Carballido is an activist fighting for criminal justice, prison and parole reform. Her younger brother is serving a 35 year sentence at Stateville Prison despite not being the killer in the crime for which he is accused. Paula will speak about the injustices her entire family has faced in fighting the criminal justice system in Illinois . Shaun Harkin is an Irish immigrant and active member of the March 10 Movement. His brother was put on immigration hold by ICE in New York City and spent three months in a Pennsylvania detention before being deported to Ireland . Shaun will discuss his brother's experience and will also present a brief history of the struggle against anti-immigrant repression.
