Tuesday, September 9 at 6:30
Radio Arte, 1401 W. 18th St. , Pilsen

Immigrant rights activist Jorge Mujica will present the testimonies of: Nancy
Flores, Dustin Simmons, Severa Ruiz, Erika Herrera, Paula Carballido, Shaun
Harkin and others.

Nancy Flores
On Thanksgiving Day last year, a drunken police officer crashed into a car,
killing Nancy ’s brother and his friend. Chicago Police Department officials
have done everything possible to cover up evidence showing the officer was
drunk. Nancy will discuss the latest developments in the case and how they have
confronted the racism of Chicago ’s police institutions to get justice.

Dustin Simmons is part of the 8th Section in Chicago Fire’s Toyota Park
Stadium. Members of the Latino Sector in the stands have faced racist
harassment by security employees of Monterrey Security Inc. In a show of
solidarity, all groups of the 8th Section came together to protest the abuse,
unfolding a huge banner that read “Fire, stop your racism!”  Dustin will tell
what he witnessed at the stadium and how the protest was organized.

Severa Ruiz and Erika Herrera are part of the Families of the Mission .
Severa’s husband, Juan and Erika’s brother, José, have faced the possibility of
deportation after being held for traffic stops by the Chicago Police
Department.  Thanks to the Mission ’s efforts, Juan is free, but José continues
his fight to be released. Severa and Erika will relate their experiences
dealing with the police and with Cook County Jail.

Paula Carballido is an activist fighting for criminal justice, prison  and
parole reform. Her younger brother is serving a 35 year sentence at Stateville
Prison despite not being the killer in the crime for which he is accused.
Paula will speak about the injustices her entire family has faced in fighting
the criminal justice system in Illinois .

Shaun Harkin is an Irish immigrant and active member of the March 10 Movement.
His brother was put on immigration hold by ICE in New York City and spent three
months in a Pennsylvania detention before being deported to Ireland .  Shaun
will discuss his brother's experience and will also present a brief history of
the struggle against anti-immigrant repression. Read one of his article at
