Dear Friends,

The following message was posted as a discussion on our group page by
group member, Nathalie Contreras. I wanted to share it with everyone
so they can learn about some of the very meaningful work being done
around the issue of immigration and efforts to stop the I.C.E. raids
across the nation.

Hopefully it will inspire others to get more involved and share our
mission with people they know. Remember the words of Cesar Chavez who
said that, "Talk is cheap. It's the way we organize and use our lives
every day that tells what we believe in."

In Solidarity,

Efrén Paredes, Jr./Tlecoz Huitzil

Profesores and Estudiantes,

My name is Nathalie Contreras and I am contacting you on behalf of the
Center for Working Poor. I am organizing a large hunger strike in Los
Angeles to bring attention to immigrant rights 3 weeks before the
election. The unprecedented increase of anti-immigrant attacks has
torn apart families and communities.

In the past, the immigrant rights movement has brought together
immigrants of all backgrounds and citizens in the form of marches,
walkouts, and boycotts to demand an end to the dehumanization of
immigrants through it’s unfair systemmatized policies. We have told
the nation: “Hoy marchamos. Manana votamos.”

Now, at a time when we can seize the opportunity to vote, this option
is not available for the estimated 13 million undocummented immigrants
affected by the problem.

Our goal is to start a truth campaign. Much like other respectable
leaders in our community, such as Cesar Chavez, we will use the fast
to mobilize our community and to educate about our struggle to the
larger public. We are bringing together various members of our
community (so far we have confirmed Maria Elena Durazo and are working
on bringing in other leaders) to support this cause.

We hope that in undertaking this tremendous sacrifice we will be able
motivate others to take a stand against the growing fear of ICE raids,
to build a stronger community, motivate those that can exercise their
right to vote, and to build for further action.

The fast we will engage all channels to mobilize. In preparation for
the fast we will be bringing together students, members of the
community, and other people of conscious to do non-violence action
trainings and education, community organizing trainings, and
internships.

I would like to know if it is possible to make presentations to
classes that might already be focused on immigration and that might be
interested in participating any volunteer opportunities or the action.

Also, I would like to know if any other student clubs or organizations
might be also want to participate in mobilizing for this action. If
you could assist with this endeavor it is much appreciated.

Please contact me for more information or to set up a presentation.

In the Struggle,

Nathalie Contreras
