Domestic Violence Prayer Vigil
Sisters / Hermanas Joining Together & Ripping the Silence

Chicago – Women of all ethnic backgrounds will join in prayer for Domestic
Violence Awareness Vigil.  The month of October is dedicated to the national
campaign Against Domestic Violence.  The unity comes with the intent to connect
batter woman advocates across the nation who are working to end the violence
and to help those still trapped in the cycle of violence to rip the silence.

Aruna Ballabhaneni a domestic violence survivor from India stated, “ We shall
come together to remember all those we have lost to this horrible reality…and
we will pray for those who live still in a prison of violence even today.  I
came across an ocean to save my life…if my journey can inspire one of my
sisters to help them escape then I feel blessed to be alive today.”

In 1989 the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative legislation
was passed by the U.S. Congress.  The legislation has passed every year since
with the National Coalition against Domestic Violence providing key leadership
in this effort.

Patricia Maciel of the Native American Church of the Four Lodges stated, “ This
is the time of the woman…we will all gather together in prayer as sisters and
as one unit, we will send all our energy to those trapped by this violence to
send them a strong message that we are here for them & pray for the Creator to
send them strength.”

“As a survivor of Domestic Violence…We need to send a profound message to
our sister that they can survive and will survive.  That no one has the right
to hurt another human being physically no matter what the circumstances.  That
no matter what the circumstance…even if you are being terrorized by an abuser
because of your legal status …your life is not worth any document. There is
HOPE and HELP you are not alone!!”.  Said Julie Santos Midwest Commissioner
LULAC National Immigrant Affairs Commission.

The women will gather in a candle light prayer vigil to remember all those lost
to domestic violence and to help those who are living in this reality to rip
the silence.  All are asked to please bring a candle.
