Press Release

Omar López, Green Party candidate for Congress, asks – “Where is Luis
Gutierrez?”
Omar López, Green Party candidate for Congressman in Illinois’ 4th
Congressional District, attended a Candidates Forum Monday night at Casa
Aztlan in the
Pilsen neighborhood, sponsored by PERRO (Pilsen Environmental Rights and
Reform Organization ), LVEJO (Little Village Environmental Justice
Organization), and CAMY (Committee Against the Militarization of our Youth).
At the
event Mr. López outlined his plans to make the 4th District a more
environmentally health place to live. He also talked about his commitment to
the creation
of a single payer, non-profit, universal health care system in the United
States and rapid withdrawal of all troops from Iraq. Democratic incumbent
Luis
Gutierrez and Republican challenger Daniel Cunningham did not attend or send
representatives to the event.
“Where is Luis Gutierrez?” asked Mr. López. “This is typical, when his
constituents need him, he is nowhere to be found.” Mr. López, a long time
immigrant rights activist and co-convener of the 2006 mega-marches for
immigrant
rights, criticized Congressman Gutierrez’s lack of leadership on the
immigration issue in particular… “Mr. Gutierrez says he is the voice of
immigrants
in the Congress, but when immigrants really needed him to put forward
comprehensive immigration reform legislation, he proposed the STRIVE ACT
instead,
which puts criminalization before legalization.”
So far, the Monday night event is the only candidates forum to be held this
election season in the 4th Congressional District. “I call on the media –
T.V., Radio, and the papers – to organize another debate before Election Day,
so that the residents of the 4th Congressional district really understand
their options on on Nov. 4th. I will certainly be there, but I bet once again
will have to ask, where is Luis Gutierrez?” stated Mr. Lopez.
