Action for Justice is an emerging grassroots organization made up of low and 
moderate income people working together for community empowerment and social 
and economic justice.  Action for Justice supports the basic human rights of 
men and women, addresses the root causes of poverty, promotes community 
development without displacement and mobilizes members for mutual support and 
campaigns for social and economic justice.  NA4J is a member-driven direct 
action organization with a focus on community issues on Chicago's North Side 
while working in coalition with housing, labor, religious, civil rights, peace 
and other progressive organizations.

Organizer position responsibilities:
The Community Organizer will be the lead staff person working closely with the 
Steering Committee and volunteer leaders to build the membership base, develop 
leaders and mobilize members to take action on campaigns.  Some administrative, 
office management, fundraising and related volunteer coordination duties are 
also required.  This is an organizing job, and calls for long and irregular 
hours, including some evenings and weekends.  An overview of responsibilities 
includes:

Base-Building:  The organizer will be responsible for meeting recruitment goals 
of dues-paying members, using a variety of outreach techniques and working 
closely with volunteer leaders.  This includes doorknocking, house meetings, 
one-on-one meetings tenant organizing, etc.
Campaigns: The heart of Northside Action for Justice is taking action as part 
of campaigns for social and economic justice. The organizer will work with 
committees and volunteer leaders to develop campaigns, mobilize members and 
evaluate progress.
Committee Support and Development: Staff provides support to issue and 
organizational committees, including logistical, research, planning, 
accountability, etc.
Fundraising: The Organizer will help implement fundraising plan, including 
membership dues and grassroots events.
Leadership Development:  The Organizer will encourage, foster and develop the 
abilities of members to play leading roles in developing and building the 
organization. 
Administration. Staff will have some administrative and office management 
duties.

Qualifications
-Solid commitment to the principles of social and economic justice.
-Minimum of three years professional grassroots organizing experience.
-Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
-Ability to be a self-starter, and to work independently toward agreed upon 
goals.
-A strong ability to motivate people, coordinate volunteer activity and 
delegate responsibility.
-Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
-Proficiency in database management, word processing and desktop publishing.
