Comite Solidaridad Migrante Dupage sigue abriendo camino en su compromiso de
educar, organizar y unificar a la comunidad en apoyo de los derechos tanto de
los inmigrantes como de la comunidad latina en el condado Dupage, al oeste de
Chicago.
Asi, el Comite Solidaridad Migrante Dupage ha estado organizando, asesorando y
armando reuniones mensuales, foros, talleres y conferencias de prensa-- en un
condado que ha experimentado cambios demograficos drasticos en los ultimos dos
decadas, introdeciendo a Dupage miles de trabajadores inmigrantes y sus
familias. Comite Solidaridad Migrante Dupage, producto de los cambios, es el
primer grupo comunitario pro-inmigrante en el condado organizado por
inmigrantes latinos y sus simpatizantes.
El Comite se ha suscrito al llamado “Campana de 100 Dias” que tiene como mision
el presionar a la nueva administracion Obama para una legalizacion de todos los
inmigrantes indocumentados en la nacion asi promolgando eventos mensuales a fin
de que la comunidad siga uniendose y conscientizando para luego culminar en una
marcha masiva el primero de Mayo.
Para esta fin, Comite Solidaridad Migrante traera a Dupage los trabajadores
victoriosos de Republic Windows en Chicago junto con el invitado especial Jorge
Mujica del Comite 10 de Marzo para un foro comuntario informativo sabado, el 28
de febrero a las 2PM en la biblioteca Glenside, 25 East Fullerton, Glendale
Heights. En el corazon de Dupage, los trabajadores hablaran de su victoria
mientras Mujica hara un analisis de como se relaciona esta lucha de
trabajadores a la campana nacional para una legalizacion de los trabajadores
inmigrantes indocumentados.
Los trabajadores de Republic Windows, la mayoria de quienes fueron inmigrantes
latinos, ocuparon por seis dias en deciembre del 2008 la misma planta que les
habia despedido sin aviso previo y sin otorgarles los benificios que les
correspondian por ley-- accion, que culmino en una victoria historica, que
capturo la imaginacion de trabajadores inmigrantes y sus aliados por todo los
Estados Unidos y el mundo. Como dijo el trabajador Heriberto Barriga en aquel
entonces, “No se trato solo de una victoria para nosotros mismos sino para toda
la nacion, porque ustedes ya saben que pueden hacer lo mismo.”
Los trabajadores junto con Jorge Mujica traeran su mensaje inspirador a nuestro
condado para los muchos trabajadores tanto inmigrantes como latinos en Dupage,
que sufren a diario de acosos, lesiones y despidos, en las muchas fabricas,
bodegas y trabajos de construccion y servicio en nuesto condado.

REPUBLIC WINDOW WORKERS WITH SPECIAL GUEST JORGE MUJICA OF THE MARCH 10

Committee Immigrant Solidarity Dupage continues breaking new ground in its
commitment to educate, organize and unify the community in support of the
rights of both the immigrant and Latino community in Dupage County, west of
Chicago.
The Committee has been providing material and moral support to the community
organizing monthly planning meetings, community forums, workshops and press
conferences, in a county that has experienced drastic demographic changes
seeing thousands of immigrant workers and their families moving to Dupage. The
Committee itself is a product of these changes, being the first pro-immigrant
community group organized by Latino immigrants and their allies.
The Committee has signed on to the national “100 Days Campaign” and its mission
to pressure the new Obama Administration for a legalization of all undocumented
workers in the nation by promoting monthly events to unify and raise
consciousness in the community and culminating in a massive May Day march.
To this end, Committee Immigrant Solidarity Dupage will be hosting workers from
the Republic Windows Factory in Chicago together with Jorge Mujica of the March
10 Coalition for community forum Saturday, February 28, at 2Pm at the Glenside
Public Library in Glendale Heights. Here, in the heart of Dupage, the workers
will speak of their victory while Jorge Mujica will provide commentary and
analysis as to how these worker’s struggle relates to the national campaign for
a legalization for all undocumented immigrant wo rkers.
The Republic Window workers, the majority of whom where Latino immigrants,
occupied their plant for six days this past December after being fired without
the compensation or prior notice due them by law. Their action culminated in a
historic victory that captured the imagination of immigrant workers across the
United States and the world. As worker Heriberto Barriga was quoted saying at
the time, “It was not only for us, it was for everybody nationwide, because
they can do the same thing.”
The workers together with Mujica will bring their inspiring message for the
many immigrant and Latino workers that suffer daily from harassment, firings,
discrimination and injury in the many factories, warehouses, construction and
service industry jobs in Dupage.
