NJ Civil Rights Defense Committee had a powerful presence at the meeting and our intervention was a big step in continuing to put pressure on the Freeholders to terminate the immigration detention contract and in the meantime open up visitation to the community. I particularly want to thank everyone who spoke - the eloquence of your comments was really moving! We will be having a regular NJ Civil Rights Defense Committee meeting next Friday night, February 27th at 6 pm at the Reformed Church of Highland Park, 19 S. 2nd Street, Highland Park, NJ in the Church Parlor. You can park in the lot in the back. We look forward to seeing you all! We will be having a discussion about how to continue our campaign with the Freeholders and maintain our ties with the detainees. We have set up two committees - a Detainee Committee to work directly with the detainees inside and a Website Committee to update our website (http://www.nj-civilrights.org). If you are interested in getting involved please let us know. In addition, we are continuing our Community Education and Outreach campaign - we are planning another screening of The Visitor very shortly. If you know of a community group that would like to invite NJ Civil Rights Defense Committee to show The Visitor and host a discussion afterwards we are available to do that. Two documentary filmmakers were present at the Freeholders meeting and we will have raw footage of the event up on our website shortly. If you are a photographer, filmmaker, writer, or artist we need your skills! Help us document the abuses of immigrant detention.
