Well, not at *all* costs.  Some forks are essential, like gcc/egcs and
XFree86/X.org.  The list of stable forks is very small, maybe a dozen:
FreeBSD/NetBSD, NetBSD/OpenBSD, byacc/bison, Emacs/XEmacs are the ones
that come to mind right away.
