True at the level of system calls (and therefore from within Chicken
code), decidedly *not* true at the level of batch files, where / indicates
a switch (a hangover from DOS, which borrowed it from CP/M, and ultimately
from various DEC operating systems such as RT-11, OS/8, and TOPS-10).

Mini-rant: standard Windows dialogue boxes won't accept slashes either,
though there is no reason why they shouldn't.
