I don't see how it's so bizarre. I'd paraphrase it thus:
I admit that Haskell (or whatever) might make my job much
easier, but I don't *know* any Haskell, and I do know
Java, and it's definitely better than Apple II Basic for
web programming, which is what they pay me for, so I guess
I'll use Java.
