Just to be clear, elf -- what specifically is the bug that you see
here? Do you really see unpredictability, or just an unexpected
result? What should be the correct behaviour?

FWIW, Gambit's result in this case is identical to Chicken's:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gsi
Gambit Version 4.0 beta 20
> (define foo 'quote)

1

So is Guile's:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ guile
guile> (define foo 'quote)
guile> (case foo ('a 1) (else 2))
1
