I'd suggest getting rid of qs altogether but I doubt people would be happy with that. Instead, all procedures should accept argument lists only, so nothing needs to go through the shell but only exec(vp/ve/..). I think every shell has different special characters and rules. It's generally just a big mess you should avoid if at all possible.
