>From what I have read and witnessed in my own baby, it
seems that smaller breeds like the protected feeling
of being covered up, almost like in a nest.  My baby
Niki burrows (sp?) under our pillows on the bed, under
blankies.  She also does the scratching thing with
both handfeet (paws :-) before lying down sometimes. 
I saw a documentary on canines that said this is a
habit from the wild when they'd have to make sure
where they were going to lie down was safe, clean,
etc.
