Hello all, I just joined this group....primarily because I was looking for a little advice. What a way to start out...asking questions huh??
Anyways, I am a chi owner and breeder with 20 years experience with chis. I breed AKC chis informally, I am not a for money breeder. I breed one litter a year simply because I enjoy the pups so much, and sell them only at a price to cover my expenses. Anyhow, I have always been very careful to make sure I breed for the betterment of the breed and try to keep within AKC breed standards. OK, no problem there..... A short time ago, I rescued a full bred, but unregistered chi. He was bought at a flea market by one inexperienced with chis. She was told he was only a year old, but she later found out he was at least 8 and had several health problems that are common with older chis. In other words, she was in over her head. Being experienced with Chis, I took the little 2 1/2 lb long haired fellow in. This is where the problem arises. He REALY liked my little female!!! Now I fear pups may be on the way. I am of course worried about this dogs unknown history so I am not sure what he may be passing on. But my biggest concern, and the one I would like to know if anyone else has experienced, is a leg deformity. This leg appears to me to be a deformity that many of you may know as being common with inbred chis. (people who breed father and daughter in an effort to get smaller pups). However, it is possible it could be an old injury or even arthritis. I have no experienced with inbreeding, as I would never do that!, but I wonder, if this is the case, what effect would it have on possible pups?? Someone told me that a deformity from inbreeding would not appear in the subsequent litters. This don't sound right to me. Anyone know anything about this. I do not want a litter of deformed pups, but at the same time, I feel strongly opposed to aborting them. Sorry to make such a long first post!!! :-) ------------------------ Yahoo!
